Weidner’s Story

Early

Foundations

Dean Weidner was a self-made entrepreneur born in Chicago, IL, and raised in Colorado Springs, CO. As a teenager, one of his first jobs was helping maintain his mother’s apartment communities, an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for real estate.

This early exposure to multifamily investment revealed its long-term value and inspired him to purchase his first property in 1977: a 32-unit mid-rise in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. That acquisition became the foundation of Weidner Apartment Homes. From there, Dean steadily expanded the business, guided by a disciplined philosophy: buy right, add value, and manage effectively for the long term.

Investment

Philosophy

A deliberate and highly calculated investor, Dean often described himself as the tortoise in the classic “Tortoise and the Hare” parable, favoring consistency, strong fundamentals, and long-term performance over rapid, high-risk growth.

His disciplined approach, combined with exceptional financial management and industry expertise, enabled him to steadily expand the portfolio across North America while rarely disposing of assets. This long-term ownership strategy fostered stability within his communities and reinforced his reputation as a trusted housing provider. His portfolio growth also reflected a diversified strategy spanning multiple markets and asset types, enabling him to navigate economic cycles and market fluctuations.

As of 2026, Weidner Apartment Homes ranks as the 12th-largest multifamily owner in the U.S. This achievement is a direct result of Dean's strategic decision-making, leadership, and long-term vision, which have positioned the company as a leader in each of its markets.

Despite this success, Dean consistently credited the company’s achievements to its associates, whom he firmly regarded as its greatest asset.
